History of Olympus Cameras : 1971-1992
OM Series
The three major problems with single-lens reflex cameras were size, weight, and shutter noise /shock. The OM Series solved all of these problems. Olympus created a major hit product by packing a powerful system capable of photographing everything from stars to bacteria into the world's lightest and most compact body. The factor that allowed Olympus to eliminate the three problems was the uncompromising determination of everyone involved from design through to production. Considerable effort was applied to the reduction of weight, including the replacement of minute brass screws with steel screws, which were slightly lighter.

OM Two Digit Series
While the single digit OM Series models were created for professionals, the double digit models were developed for general users. In 1979, Olympus introduced the affordably priced OM10, which featured automatic exposure (AE) based on TTL direct light metering, and a fixed viewfinder screen. The OM10 attracted intense interest and was very popular. The series continued to evolve with the subsequent introduction of OM20, OM30 and OM40, all of which offered advanced features.

XA Capsule Cameras
These ultra-compact models were developed as compact, lightweight cameras that would be small enough to slip into a pocket. This concept was realized by adding a sliding barrier that turned the shell into a capsule. The XA Series cameras were extremely attractive products that maximized the flexibility of compact cameras.

Autofocus Cameras
By the 1980s the camera market was dominated by autofocus models. Cameras were becoming fully automated, with features that included automatic winding and built-in strobe flash units. It was in this period that Olympus introduced the world's first weatherproof compact cameras.
